Oh no. I just heard on Mark's show that Andrew Gold passed away. His two hits, "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You For Being a Friend" were such radio mainstays in my Wonder Years. Hearing those songs always brings me back to those summer days in family car trips, or riding bikes with my pals or poring over the new Radio Shack catalog up in the attic. Thanks Andrew, for that and more.

The 50, 90 remain unchanged from their major engine changes two years ago, but how long do they stay classic? Not very, we figure.

I sometimes see this kind of thing. Japanese words romanized with

the variation. Older signs have this a lot, but this sign, fairly new

sports the 'alternate' spelling.

Higashiguchi is the way one would pronounce this. Translated as East exit.

The Higashi 'romanized" spelling uses 'si' for "shi" and "ti" for "chi".

Also, commonly misrepresented is the spelling of the sound 'tsu' （つ).

I would never take a photo of a homeless person. It's a violation of their dignity and totally uncool to do so regardless of how newsworthy or photogenic the subject is. It's wrong.

But for people who choose to be foolish and irresponsible, not to mention downright stupid in public, well, they are fair game.

I see this all the time. Early morning chics passed out in public places. One can only imagine how many are passed out in private places, some never to be seen again. Note the cops' attitude about it. This is a very common situation for them, as is seen in their expressions. About an hour later when I passed by again, the ambulance arrived and took the Shibuya girl away to sober her up or clean her out of whatever substances she abused.

Ironic that the trash collectors are doing pretty much the same thing as the ambulance staff.

Harsh? Perhaps, but not nearly as harsh as life is going to be to these young women who are

buying reserve seats for an express train to a life of misery, abuse and misfortune. I just hate to see people who have so much, take so much for granted, and throw it away, while others, disabled, sick with cancer, or other terminal diseases would give anything for the health and opportunities that these young gals have who throw it away. All in the name of being 'cool' or 'fashionable'. Sometimes I really think the human race is becoming more stupid by the minute.

Saw this 427 Cobra pass me in an intersection. I boogied through some neighborhoods and caught up with him! (cuz he stopped to watch a little league game for a minute!) At the next light, I pulled over and asked if I could take a snap. He happily obliged. Thumbs up. Gave me a nice throttle rev and take off from the light. Didn't get a long enough look to see if it was original aluminum bodied Cobra. Emblems displayed "427 Cobra" It was definitely a big block sound. Kit repro or original, not sure. Anyone?

Justifying Yourself in Zero Gravity

These questions are becoming more and more prevalent in queries from the press to the astronauts in space.

It's no surprise since rumors have been circulating that the Obama administration will be making huge cuts in NASA. The Moon shot and Mars expeditions that President Bush announced publicly over a year ago are also in danger of being reduced, or scrubbed altogether.

A sad day indeed, when America can't afford to look beyond its borders and forge new futures for new generations, rather than borrowing from them.

Dealer Takes 110

I stopped by the Honda Dream dealer in Nishi Tokyo to take a close up look at the new Super Cub 110.

Pillion seat. Long seats are not usually installed on Cubs in Japan as they are for the export models.

Exhaust is matte black with steel chrome leg protector.

Modernized instrumentation, hand grips and switches.

Access to the battery.

Telescoping front suspension.

The gray chain guard is plastic.

The matte black is a rubber cover for the tank which resides beneath it. The two black corners are part of the tank. Below the rear carrier you can see the tube frame (black with white and red

decals).

Temple visit

Took a scenic ride along the Tama River yesterday. Stumbled upon this hidden temple near Komae station. The Mon gate beckoned as an irresistable doorway into the past.

Ojizo watching over.

Intricate dragon purifying well. The presence of the dragon in this form gives a solid clue to the Chinese influence of this order.

Beautiful bell tower. No one was around and I was very tempted to ascend.

But it was time to push on.

Spotted another new 110. This one has the single ramen box pendulum. He just delivered noodles to a Police Koban. And yes, he is picking his nose as he rides off.

I noticed the exhaust sounded a bit throaty. Sure enough as he went by, I noticed the aftermarket muffler. He didn't waste time, did he?

This shop used to have a CD50 parked out front. Now, I see they've "upgraded" to the new Super Cub 110. Hearing it pull away from the curb, it sounded more like a Today or Dio then a Super Cub. But it did have nice pick-up with a sack of rice in the back basket.

Well, Honda is releasing a 110cc version of a heavily redesigned Super Cub.

These changes could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at them. (I mean that figuratively and literally.)

There are many changes to the timeless bike. Right off the bat, one can see the ubiquitous leg guard has changed, as has the actual body style and type. The entire handlebar assembly has changed, as has the instrument face, all controls, and headlight and turn signal components.

No longer a stamped steel body/frame, the actual frames resides underneath plastic body panels. The website states this is to prevent rust.

I foretold these changes, when I saw a new Yamaha Mate, which is, as a friend of mine used to call such things back in high school, " a plastic chicken" when he was referring to the 'new'(80s) Corvettes. Basically, a shell of its former self.

Well, the Cub has retained the 'look' of the cub, at least, but really, so much has changed with the design, that a Chinese Symba might actually be closer to a Honda Super Cub than a Honda Super Cub (110) is now.

The 50 and 90 cc versions are unchanged from previous models, but don't expect them to stay that way for long. It will cost Honda too much money to run drastically different style builds under the same model name.

Horsepower is up, as one would expect, but not nearly as high as one would think with the more than double cubic displacement and programmed fuel injection (PGM FI).

A telescoping front fork has replaced the Super Cub signature leading link type. Perhaps points gained in riding comfort and lost in original style department ( I may be one of the last remaining leading link fans).

A two stage clutch mechanism has been added to ease shifting, according to the website. Also, an additional gear has been added, making it a 4 speed. (long overdue)

Mileage is considerably less than the 50cc and 90cc models.

The only remaining original elements from former the Super Cub design are the outward general appearance and step-thru design. The assembly of body and engine components (Thailand) lead one to believe that the Super Cub is no longer Super, nor a real Cub.

I'll wait and see one in person to make my final assessment. I will add that, as is obvious from my comments, I'm not too thrilled with most of the changes. If the workmanship is excellent, like previous Cubs, and the design (in person) is impressive, I'll say so. But if not, I'll state that too, just like I did when I noticed rust on the 2008 'anniversary' edition models last year.

Mission to Service NASA's Hubble Space Telescope
Veteran astronaut Scott Altman will command the final space shuttle mission to service NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and retired Navy Capt. Gregory C. Johnson will serve as pilot. Mission specialists rounding out the crew are: veteran spacewalkers John Grunsfeld and Mike Massimino, and first-time space fliers Andrew Feustel, Michael Good and Megan McArthur.

During the 11-day mission's five spacewalks, astronauts will install two new instruments, repair two inactive ones and perform the component replacements that will keep the telescope functioning into at least 2014.

In addition to the originally scheduled work, Atlantis also will carry a replacement Science Instrument Command and Data Handling Unit for Hubble. Astronauts will install the unit on the telescope, removing the one that stopped working on Sept. 27, 2008, delaying the servicing mission until the replacement was ready.

I'm not one for Japanese TV drama. Very bad, usually. And very derivative of American productions like 24, etc. But this one, is unique and very, very good. Excellent production. I'd pay to see it. Well, looks like I can. It's going to be a movie, continuing the story from where the TV drama left off.

With Nao Omori, the wonderful Kyohei Shibata and Chiaki Kuriyama among others.
