Due to a panic set-in by the investigation of Livedoor, the company run by Mr. Horie, an outspoken and unorthodox challenger to Japan's financial markets, small share owners raced to sell their stock. Overwhelmed, the Nikkei shut its doors. First time ever since it opened in 1949.
