MR TEPCO - A Musical News Flash!

A tribute to the 'Fukushima 50', those brave souls fighting the odds at the nuclear power plant, as well as Dickie Goodman and his 1976 hit "Mr. Jaws" which inspired this tribute.
Also, dedicated to all those volunteers and professionals who are working around the clock to help victims of the earthquake, tsunami and radiological emergency. Heroes, all.

Abandoned: Fuchu Air Station

Fuchu Air Station present day...

Warning: Be advised. If you risk trespassing into the FAS perimeter (punishable by deportation for foreign nationals and prison sentences for natives), do not, I repeat, DO NOT climb this tower. It is not dormant. It is a functioning - operational 24/7 - microwave emitting antenna. You will suffer internal burns and quite possibly death.

... and how it looked back then.

2009 Super Cub 110 in service

This shop used to have a CD50 parked out front. Now, I see they've "upgraded" to the new Super Cub 110. Hearing it pull away from the curb, it sounded more like a Today or Dio then a Super Cub. But it did have nice pick-up with a sack of rice in the back basket.

Rock and Roll, Discovery!

Space shuttle Discovery launched on-time at 7:43 p.m. EDT and NASA flight managers confirmed mai
n engine cutoff. The shuttle has reached orbit, flying at 17,500 miles per hour.

Commander Lee Archambault will lead Discovery's crew of seven, along with Pilot Tony Antonelli, and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata on mission STS-119 to the International Space Station.

The Discovery crew members are set to fly the S6 truss segment and install the final set of power-generating solar arrays to the International Space Station. The S6 truss will complete the backbone of the station and provide one-fourth of the total power needed to support a crew of six.

Astronaut shines as JAXA’s first to live in space

Excitement is building for the upcoming STS-119 mission to the International Space Station, especially within Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA. The S6 truss and solar arrays will be delivered, as well as Koichi Wakata, JAXA’s first astronaut to live and work on the orbiting laboratory.

“This is a very big milestone for Japan’s government, as well as for the Japanese people,” Hiroki Furihata, deputy director of the JAXA liaison office at Kennedy Space Center said. “The JAXA engineers working on the Kibo elements for a future mission are excited, as well.”

New Japan vs. Old Japan

Slouched, sloppy attire, looking down playing Nintendo, PS3+, or fiddling with the latest and greatest keitai (cell phone) probably less than 3 months old vs. upright posture, clean and pressed suit, reading morning newspaper.

When I see views like this, I can't help but think that the funniest part is, that youth is certain he's being "Green" - that he's hip and connected to the world, making his contribution, being important, and fighting the good fight against all those evil old-timers and big corporations like his old fashioned neighbor who's reading a nasty newspaper made from cutting down innocent trees.

Our youth forgot to use that overrated secondary organ in his calcified membrane known as a skull which would have reminded him that the constant manufacture of parts for the literally millions of cell phones produced MONTHLY in Japan alone, and the associated labor, factories, energy required to run same, microwave radiation to send the signals, the monstrous steel towers to carry those signals, the steel to make those towers, the iron ore extracted from the GREEN HILLS of Earth turning mountains into mole hills to make that steel and all the millions of metric tons of polymers synthesized from, yup, you guessed it, OIL, (that evil substance stolen from Mother Gaia by big fat American corporations) that's right, petroleum to make the plastic to make the latest and greatest casings and knobs for the never-ending style changes that occur each and every week on each and every model for all those lovely electronic EMF spewing parts inside - all of that might skew the numbers in another direction if he bothered to think it through. Which we assume he most likely never, ever will. Yup, he just didn't think it through.

(I'm always reminded of Robert Deniro's wonderful character in the equally-wonderful movie Wag the Dog when he explains why the CIA couldn't arrest them. "He just didn't think it through, that's all.")

Yes, this kid didn't follow it through, but that's not the only reason he didn't think on these things. Because if that were the reason, the sole reason, then eventually, he WOULD figure it all out, he would realize that his existence is mainly a daily rationalization of what he might call, in other people's behavior, 'evils'.

No, he won't realize this. Why not? Because along with everything else he has, he has one thing in sublime abundance yet which he has no use for AT ALL, nor even a reason for having, unlike a cell phone or a computer, which are undoubtedly convenient and useful. No, there is one thing he has in abundance more than the closet full of Converse sneakers and Abercrombie T-shirts, more than baseball hats and more than all the now unfashionable iPod non-disposable color carrying cases that no longer fit the latest unit, more than all those combined. What is it? Nothing but something that has been around for a very long time, Mr. Mulder, a very long time. Arrogance. That's right, arrogance. He's got that in spades. He's certain he's in the right, that he and those who look like him are pacifists in this war on mother nature. He's certain as there are little green apples that this is so. That certainty, that militant certainty will be his downfall, and quite possibly the rest of ours, as well. For this generation acts before thinking, not that this is anything new, but with the speed and global reach of the net, and the quick-to-judge, yet frighteningly unquestioning mind, we have what might be called a pandemic of sophomoric blindness.

Of course, this is all an assumption, all speculation (like humans being the cause of Global Warming). When in fact, that youth may indeed be a bright, honest, selfless instrument of humanity, jotting down a reminder to put in extra hours volunteering at the local nursing home, or calculating a bold, new formulae for a cure for cancer.

Or maybe not.

In any case, I sometimes think the doomsayers like Ed Dames on Coast to Coast AM are right when they say we are headed for the End Times. It seems there are less and less examples of class (and hygiene!) and more and more of self-centered sloppiness, as if it were a 'right'. It's one thing to be sloppy, to be dirty, to be annoying and obnoxious, but to be those things AND to be arrogant, well that's just plain boring.

One thing's for sure. The world is turning into a huge gadget-idolizing net-hooked, tattooed, porned and pierced slobfest bent on destroying the planet all in the name of saving it.

Count me out! I'll just head for my island in the sun, riding my time machine and always smiling.

Honda Feels the Green

(This is an unchanged new 90cc for comparison.)

Well, File this under the heading, 'Fixed when wasn't broken'. Honda has made some, in my opinion unsightly, and misguided changes to the Super Cub Standard and Press Cub and Little Cub.

My precious Super Cub Street is unchanged as of yet, thankfully. But I fear it's only a matter of time. Maybe next year's model?

Yes, that big bad monster known as Global Warming (® Trademark) has forced Honda to implement some design changes to the Cub making it less powerful, slower, and with lower fuel mileage ratings. Wonderful. Sounds great, doesn't it?

It now contains an electronic computerized fuel injection system called PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection System)

To achieve: "global environment-friendly for an even more dependable, more comfortable Cub series" "and the atmospheric conditions such as engine revolutions, the computer is always ideal fuel usage control. Optimal timing and amount of fuel supply, so the engine performance out efficiently."

Hogwash. In other words, performance is sacrified in the name of being green, so called. Here's an idea, why not just scrap the delivery bike all together, and go back to rickshaws and handcarts? You get green and in-shape at the same time.

Let't take a look at the new "improved" AA02E engine system:

Went from

POWER:
(kw[PS]/rpm) From 2.9 [4.0] /7,000 to 2.5 [3.4]/7,000

TORQUE:
(N・m[kg・m]/rpm) From 4.7[0.48]/4,500 to 3.8 [0.39]/5,000

FUEL MILEAGE:
(km/L) From 130.0 km/liter to 110.0 km/liter

FUEL CAPACITY:
(Liters) From 4.0 to 3.4

Now, that's progress! If that wasn't bad enough, and I'm not all a numbers guy, appearance is very important, so when they start messin' around withe the design, I take notice.

They've colored the engine black (why not green?) and added a cheap looking leg guard over the tailpipe to replace the bar type guard. The mount for the tailpipe is now a bumpy chrome, rather than black as it used to be.

Now, the bike looks more plastic and more like the Yamaha Mate.

And if that weren't enough, it's now more expensive than ever, breaking the 200,000yen mark for a basic barebones Cub. More for Custom, Deluxe, Press varieties.

Now, my bet is, this new bike will actually use and waste more fuel due to its lower power to weight ratio, and in the end contribute more to so called global warming than the previous model.

Soichiro would not be proud.

Links (note the cut off point in the pics on their splash pages. Clearly, they are using older photos that don't have the new black engine. What does that say?)

To be fair, the black engine with the black color scheme in the Little Cub matches well.

And the last holdout and UNCHANGED Super Cub:

UPDATE: Ok, scratch that. Honda no longer offers the "Street" designation of the Super Cub Standard. I guess that makes mine that much more unique and hard to find. :)

CB2 Child Robot: Mechanicals at your service

I wonder if Ray Bradbury knows about this?

This mechanical toddler robot developed by Japan Science and Technology is loaded w/ sensors that react to physical and visual cues. It can even say "ouch!" (in Japanese).
